[July 07, 2010]  (AP)  A similar weather pattern was in store for the U.S. on Wednesday, with high pressure in the East and a front over the Plains.

A low pressure system slowly tracking through central Canada would continue pushing a cold front through the central U.S. The system would start the day extending from the Great Lakes and into the central Plains, and reach into the mid-Mississippi Valley and the southern Plains by evening. This would bring another day of flooding to the Mississippi River Valley as another round of moderate to heavy rainfall was associated with the front. Up to 2 inches of rain was expected in areas of severe storm development. This system has a history of producing severe storms with large hail, strong winds and even tornadoes. Another warm and humid day was expected over the Plains, with the North remaining in the 70s and 80s, while the South would reach into the 90s again.

The East Coast would see another hot and humid day as a strong ridge of high pressure dominated on Wednesday. The Northeast, New England and Mid-Atlantic States would remain under heat and air-quality advisories. This is because high pressure brings sunny skies and sinking air, which allows for heat and pollution to be trapped near the surface. Most of the East Coast would approach 100 degrees again.

In the Southeast, however, another round of scattered showers was expected as onshore flow persisted from the Gulf of Mexico. An area of low pressure spinning in the Gulf had a moderate chance for tropical storm development and would continue spreading moderate to heavy thunderstorms over the surrounding shores.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Tuesday ranged from a low of 32 degrees at Truckee, Calif., to a high of 116 degrees at Death Valley, Calif.
