[July 13, 2010] (AP) A cold front was forecast to slowly make its way toward the East Coast on Tuesday, spreading showers and thunderstorms from New England southward to the Southeast.

The southern portion of the cold front would linger over the mid-Mississippi Valley and Tennessee Valley, keeping scattered showers and thunderstorms going. Some of these storms would be severe enough, producing hail and damaging winds. Regions from the lower Tennessee Valley eastward into the Carolinas and northwestward into the Mid-Atlantic states were likely to see severe thunderstorms. In addition, moist southerly winds would bring muggy conditions across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic.

Moving to the northern Plains, a cold front associated with a storm system in Alberta and Saskatchewan would move across the region Tuesday. Scattered showers and thunderstorms were expected with this system. Severe storms were likely to develop in North Dakota and northern South Dakota on Tuesday afternoon and then move eastward into Minnesota during the evening hours, producing severe hail and damaging winds with possibly a tornado or two. Apart from the storms, temperatures would rapidly fall to below normal after the front pushed through.

Elsewhere, isolated afternoon and evening thunderstorms were possible in parts of Arizona and New Mexico as tropical moisture crept up from Mexico.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Monday ranged from a low of 37 degrees at Leadville, Colo., to a high of 112 degrees at Ocotillo Wells, Calif.
