[July 15, 2010]  (AP)  Unsettled weather activity was forecast to persist throughout portions of the central U.S. on Thursday as a strong low pressure system in southern Canada dragged a cold front through the Midwest.

As the front progressed through the hot and humid environment of the Midwest, showers, thunderstorms and locally heavy rainfall would continue to fire up along the front from the Great Lakes through the central Plains. Forecasters said areas from the upper Great Lakes down into the Ozarks might experience severe weather activity with damaging winds and possible tornadoes.

Meanwhile, dangerously hot temperatures and high humidity levels would force heat index values in the central Plains and the mid-Mississippi Valley well above the century mark again. Residents of these areas were encouraged to take proper precautions against excessive heat, including limiting strenuous outdoor activities and drinking plenty of fluids.

Elsewhere, areas of scattered showers and thunderstorms were forecast to develop in the Southeast through the afternoon as muggy conditions remained over the region. To the north, drier conditions and moderately warmer temperatures were expected in the Northeast and portions of the Mid-Atlantic.

Finally, in the West, monsoon moisture from the south and daytime heating would spark more scattered showers and thunderstorms across the Four Corners. Meanwhile, outside of a few rumbles of thunder across the inner mountains, dry conditions with warmer temperatures were expected throughout the West Coast states.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Wednesday ranged from a low of 25 degrees at Stanley, Idaho, to a high of 118 degrees at Death Valley, Calif.
