[July 16, 2010]  (AP)  Hot conditions were forecast to persist in the West, while the East Coast would remain stormy on Friday.

A low pressure system in Canada continued pulling a cold front through the eastern half of the country. The system would obtain energy and strength as it moved toward the Atlantic and pulled in additional moisture. Moisture from the Gulf of Mexico would also feed into this front, allowing for warm and humid conditions. This front would kick up scattered showers and thunderstorms, some of which may turn severe, as it has a history of producing strong winds and heavy rainfall. Flooding problems were expected to persist over the Mississippi River Valley and Ohio River Valley.

The Southeast would remain in the 90s, while the Northeast and New England would see highs in the 80s to near 90.

Meanwhile, behind this system, a ridge of high pressure would build over the Plains and bring warm and pleasant weather to the northern Plains and upper Midwest. Sunny skies were expected with highs in the 80s and 90s.

In the West, more hot weather was expected as a strong ridge of high pressure built over the West Coast. This would create strong offshore flow over the coast and allow for dry and warm air to spread from the deserts to the coasts. Heat advisories were issued as temperatures were expected to reach over 100 in the deserts, with heat indexes reaching well into the 110s.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Thursday ranged from a low of 30 degrees at Stanley, Idaho, to a high of 125 degrees at Death Valley, Calif.
