[July 23, 2010]  NEW YORK (AP) -- "Nightline" co-anchor Martin Bashir (buh-SHEER') is leaving ABC News to become an anchor for MSNBC and a contributor to "Dateline NBC."

NBC announced Thursday that Bashir will anchor a daily afternoon program on MSNBC in addition to his new role with "Dateline NBC." The switch will take effect in September.

Bashir joined ABC's newsmagazine "20/20" in 2004 and became a "Nightline" co-anchor a year later.

Meanwhile, ABC News announced that Bill Weir (WEER), who co-anchors the weekend edition of "Good Morning America," will join "Nightline" alongside current co-anchors Terry Moran (mohr-AN') and Cynthia McFadden. They, with Bashir, made up the original three-host format that replaced Ted Koppel in 2005.
