[July 23, 2010]  The National Weather Service says temperatures are expected to climb into the mid-90s across central Illinois on Friday afternoon, with heat index values ranging from 105 to 109 degrees. This will produce dangerous conditions for anyone who needs to be outdoors for any length of time.

Isolated thunderstorms will be possible tonight. At this time it appears the severe threat will be along or north of Interstate 74. Damaging straight-line winds, torrential rain and frequent lightning are possible Saturday through Thursday, the weather service reported.

Heat index readings over 100 degrees can cause increased risk of heat exhaustion or heat stroke for anyone spending time outdoors, the National Weather Service warned. It's especially dangerous for children, the elderly or those with medical conditions.

Some advice from the weather service:

  • Drink plenty of fluids without alcohol or caffeine.

  • Stay in an air-conditioned room.

  • Keep out of the sun.

  • Check on relatives and neighbors during hot weather.
