The nation's weather

[July 26, 2010]  (AP)  Active weather was forecast to continue throughout the southeastern quadrant of the nation Monday as a frontal boundary from the North stalled over the region.

InstaHardwarebility along the front would spark scattered showers and thunderstorms throughout the day. This frontal disturbance would also keep hot and muggy weather conditions over the Southeast. Portions of the region would experience yet another day under heat advisories as daytime highs reached near the century mark and heat index values rose well above it. Behind the front, relatively cooler conditions would return to the Mid-Atlantic with near seasonal temperatures.

In the North, southerly flow and moisture advection would trigger clusters of scattered showers and thunderstorms in the northern Plains. Forecasters said some of these storms might turn severe with strong to damaging winds.

In the West, chances of unsettling weather activity would persist across the Four Corners due to steady monsoon moisture and waves of energy trekking through the region. Increased cloud coverage would dampen daytime heating, thus causing afternoon highs to reach to below-average values. Farther west, an offshore trough of low pressure would bring cooler weather and coastal fog to the coastal states. The trough would also direct moisture across the Sierra and Cascades. This would translate into more chances of scattered showers and thunderstorms across the ranges through the day.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Sunday ranged from a low of 34 degrees at Stanley, Idaho, to a high of 125 degrees at Death Valley, Calif.
