[July 29, 2010]  (AP)  Active weather was forecast to continue throughout the eastern half of the nation Thursday.

A low pressure system in southeastern Canada would drag a cold front toward the East Coast. As the front progressed, showers and thunderstorms would persist along and ahead of the front, from the Northeast through portions the eastern valleys. Wet and stormy weather would also spread into the Mid-Atlantic as the front sagged southward throughout the day. Meanwhile, to the south, typical summertime scattered showers and thunderstorms would persist in the Southeast.

Behind the weather activity in the East, monsoon moisture would continue to spread northward through the Southwest across the Continental Divide and into the northern Plains with chances of showers and thunderstorms. Moisture interacting with low pressure deepening over the northern high Plains would enhance scattered showers and thunderstorms in the northern Plains. Forecasters said increased instability over this region through the afternoon may spark severe thunderstorms with damaging wind and hail across the Dakotas and northern Nebraska.

Meanwhile, calm conditions and slightly warmer daytime temperatures would return to the West Coast on Thursday as low pressure off the Oregon coast lifted northeastward. This transition would give way to weak high pressure, bringing clearer skies and a slight warming trend through the remainder of the week.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Wednesday ranged from a low of 37 degrees at Stanley, Idaho, to a high of 118 degrees at Death Valley, Calif.
