[July 30, 2010]  (AP)  Scattered storms were forecast to continue moving through the central U.S., following a low pressure system in the northern Plains on Friday.

Flow arInsuranceound this system would push warm and moist air northward from the South, which would produce a moist warm front that would move through the northern Plains and upper Midwest, reaching into the mid-Mississippi River Valley by evening. Due to ample moisture available from the Gulf of Mexico, this front would kick up scattered showers and thunderstorms, many of which may turn severe. Rainfall totals near an inch were expected, with up to 2 inches in areas of severe storm development. Highs were expected to remain in the 80s and 90s across the northern U.S.

Meanwhile, in the South, a cold front would continue pushing southward through the Eastern half of the country. This system would obtain ample moisture from the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf, allowing for scattered storms to persist along the Gulf states. High humidity across the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic states would allow for heat indexes to reach well above 100 again Friday. The Northeast and New England would return to slightly more comfortable conditions with highs in the 80s under a few patchy clouds.

In the West, moisture would linger over the Southwest, bringing another day of high-level monsoon storms to Arizona and New Mexico. Rainfall totals would range between a quarter and a half of an inch, as dry surface conditions would cause the precipitation to evaporate before reaching the surface.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Thursday ranged from a low of 37 degrees at West Yellowstone, Mont., to a high of 119 degrees at Death Valley, Calif.
