[June 03, 2010]  (AP)  A cold front sweeping through the eastern U.S. was continuing to kick up severe weather Thursday, while the Northwest was also forecast to remain rainy.

A lInsuranceow pressure system to the north would continue pushing a cold front through the Midwest and into New England throughout the day. Moisture from the Atlantic Ocean would feed strength and energy into this system, producing scattered showers and thunderstorms that would stretch from the Northeast to the Mid-Atlantic states. This front was capable of producing severe weather; thus, strong and damaging winds, large hail and periods of heavy rain were expected. Floods would remain a problem in the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys, as well as the mid- and lower Mississippi River valleys. The southern side of the front was expected to remain in the 80s, while the northern side would only reach into the 60s and 70s.

To the south, another day of scattered afternoon showers and thunderstorms was expected over the Southeast on Thursday. A ridge of high pressure spinning in the mid-Atlantic Ocean would push warm and moist air into the region, creating favorable conditions for afternoon storms. Forecasters said some of these storms might produce some severe weather with strong winds.

In the West, wet weather would persist in the Pacific Northwest and northern California as a low pressure system pushed a cold front through the region. Periods of heavy rainfall were anticipated, with snow likely at higher elevations as this system moved over the Cascades and Sierra Nevadas. This system would also bring scattered rain and snow showers to the northern Rockies.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Wednesday ranged from a low of 30 degrees at Leadville, Colo., to a high of 102 degrees at Pecos, Texas.
