[June 07, 2010]  (AP)  Active and warmer weather was expected to spread across portions of the Plains on Monday as a warm front over Texas lifted into the central Plains.

Significant precipitation and thunderstorms were expected to develop to the north of this front from areas of Nebraska and South Dakota to the mid-Mississippi Valley. Forecasters said thunderstorms in this area might turn severe with hail and tornadoes.

Meanwhile, in the East, wet and stormy weather activity in most of the Eastern Seaboard would begin to taper off as the upper half of the cold front over the region exited into the western Atlantic. The lower half of this cold front would drop toward the central Gulf Coast and continue fueling areas of scattered showers and thunderstorms in the southeastern states. A drop in temperatures was expected throughout most of the East on Monday as a cooler air mass returned to the region.

Finally, in the West, showery weather would persist in portions of the northern Intermountain West as a frontal boundary became stretched from Wyoming to Nevada. To the south, scorching temperatures exceeding the century mark would remain over the Southwest as high pressure over the region continued to pack plenty of heat.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Sunday ranged from a low of 35 degrees at Cut Bank, Mont., to a high of 110 degrees at El Paso, Texas.
