[June 10, 2010]  (AP)  Scattered showers and thunderstorms were forecast to continue moving through the eastern U.S. on Thursday while another low pressure system moved into the Plains.

A low pressure system in the Northeast would continue pushing a cold front down the East Coast and into the southeastern U.S. This would allow for scattered showers to persist over the Northeast and New England, as well as the Southeast. Highs would return to the 70s in the Northeast, while the South would return to the 90s. If these storms turn severe again, it would most likely occur in the Southeast, due to warm and humid conditions.

Meanwhile, the system moving off the Rockies would strengthen as it reached the Plains. Flow around the system would create a warm front that would sweep through the Dakotas and into the upper Midwest. Scattered showers and thunderstorms were expected to develop along this front, as atmospheric conditions were favorable for storm development. Most areas along this front would see up to half an inch of rain, while strong thunderstorms may produce over an inch. The northern Plains and upper Midwest would see another warm day with highs in the 70s. The system would also pull a cold front through the central Rockies and into the central Plains, kicking up light and scattered showers.

Farther west, a minor trough of low pressure would linger over the Pacific Northwest and northern Plains. This would bring another round of overcast skies with scattered rain showers. Rainfall totals would remain less than a tenth of an inch in most areas. This would also bring some coastal clouds to California in the morning, while the rest of the Southwest remained sunny and hot under higher pressure.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Wednesday ranged from a low of 30 degrees at Mount Washington, N.H., to a high of 107 degrees at Mesa, Ariz.
