[June 23, 2010]  (AP)  The threat of severe weather was forecast to continue Wednesday, though the main focal region for thunderstorm development would shift to the east.

InsuranceThe highest probability of intense, damaging thunderstorms would take place across southern Michigan and the surrounding states. To a lesser extent, damaging storms were anticipated from the Oklahoma Panhandle east to the Carolinas and north to New Hampshire.

All the thunderstorms in the eastern half of the country would come as a strong low pressure system moved across the northern tier states. This storm combined with moisture-laden air streaming north from the Gulf of Mexico would set up conditions very conducive to thunderstorm development.

In addition to the thunderstorm threat, the southerly winds carrying moisture northward would bring very hot temperatures to the East. Highs throughout the Southeast would rise into the triple digits in many areas and well into the 90s as far north as New England.

While the East bakes, the West would continue seeing unseasonably cold temperatures as a deep trough of low pressure remained anchored off the coast.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Tuesday ranged from a low of 30 degrees at Grand Canyon, Ariz., to a high of 111 degrees at Death Valley, Calif.
