[June 25, 2010]  (AP)  Severe weather was forecast to continue pushing through the East Coast on Friday.

A low pressure system that moved off the coast into the Atlantic Ocean would pull a cold front southward through the eastern U.S. At the same time, a ridge of high pressure in the Gulf of Mexico would push warm and moist air over the Southeastern states. As the front moved into the Southeast, this system was expected to kick up scattered showers and thunderstorms. Rainfall totals over half an inch were expected along the front, while some areas under strong storms might see over an inch of rain. This system had a history of producing severe weather with heavy downpours and strong, damaging winds. The East Coast would remain under heat watches as temperatures approach 100 degrees over the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic states.

Meanwhile in the Plains, a trough of low pressure would dip into the upper Midwest from central Canada. This would bring scattered showers and thunderstorms as it tracked through the upper Great Lakes and Midwestern states throughout the day. Forecasters said some of these storms might turn severe as it has a history of producing large hail and heavy rain.

In the West, another cool day was expected with a chance for light rain over the Pacific Northwest as a low pressure system moved onshore. This would pull moisture in and bring scattered showers to the north and higher elevations, while the Southwest remained hot, sunny and dry.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Thursday ranged from a low of 32 degrees at Yellowstone, Wyo., to a high of 111 degrees at Goodyear, Ariz.
