HardwareA strong low pressure system that brought a few inches of snow to the Southeast on Tuesday was expected to track north up the East Coast. Flow around the system could pull moisture onshore from the Atlantic Ocean and, with cool air over the region, trigger scattered snowfall in New England. Between 1 and 3 inches of snow was expected along the coast, while up to an inch an a half could fall inland.

The system was expected to remain offshore, so no significant snowfall was anticipated over the northern Appalachians.

As the system moved north, warm and dry air was expected to push into the Southeast and allow for abundant sunshine and high temperatures in the 50s. Sunny skies also were expected in most of the central U.S., from the Plains to the Mississippi River Valley and the upper Great Lakes. Highs were expected in the 30s in the North, while the southern Plains could approach the 70s.

In the West, a complex weather pattern was expected to bring snow to several areas.

A front that brought rain and high-elevation snow to the West Coast was expected to continue its eastward track, triggering snow over the Intermountain West and Great Basin. Nevada and Utah could see between 1 and 3 inches of snow. Meanwhile, a separate front could push onshore and bring more rain and mountain snow to northern California. Between 3 and 5 inches of snow was expected in the Sierra Nevadas, while lesser amounts could reach the Cascades.

On Tuesday, temperatures in the Lower 48 states ranged from a low of minus 5 degrees at Ironwood, Mich., to a high of 80 degrees at Marathon, Fla.
