To date, Logan County Board member Pat O'Neill has made the following
recommendations of students to honor as Logan County Students of the
Month. February
Logan County Student of the Month for February 2010
was Jase Camp, son of Mike and Cheryl Camp. Jase is a senior
at Lincoln Community High School, where he currently ranks sixth in
his graduating class.
He is a member of the National Honor Society
and the National Society of High School Scholars. Jase earned an
award for Outstanding Academic Excellence and the Presidents Award
for Educational Excellence. He was active in the Worldwide Youth in
Science and Engineering competition in Springfield. He was
recommended to be interviewed by the American Cancer Society Summer
High School Research Program at the SimmonsCooper Cancer Institute.
Jase is a three-year letterman for LCHS football, was captain his
senior year and received academic all-conference recognition. In
addition, he was secretary of Spanish Club and was nominated as
senior escort for homecoming.
Jase has been accepted at SIU in Edwardsville and plans to major
in chemistry with a minor in foreign language. After completing his
undergraduate studies, he plans to attend the University of Missouri
for medical school, where he would like to specialize in
cardiothoracic surgery.
Jase has demonstrated his strong desire and will to compete in
his years as an outstanding football player, thus preparing him for
the competition in his field of work.
January
Ashley Southerlan was a Logan County Student of the Month for January 2010. Ashley is a senior at Mount Pulaski
High School. Her parents are Tim and Mary Southerlan, and she has
two siblings, Matthew and Abby.
Ashley is a member of Mouth Pulaski United Methodist Church,
where she participated in a work camp that repairs houses for people
in need.
She has played basketball all four years in high school and
received awards for most improved, offensive player of the year,
first team Tomahawk Conference, first team Logan County and Logan
County co-player of the year.
Ashley currently holds a 4.2 grade-point average on a 4.0 scale
and has been in high honors throughout her four years at Mount
Pulaski High School.
Last year she was inducted into the National High Honor Society
program, where she participated in many community service projects.
She is a member of the student council, Spanish Club, Spirit Club
and also was elected to the student senate the past two years.
She doesn't know what her future plans are right now, but she
would like to go into the medical field, whether it is nursing or
physical therapy.
Ashley is a person of strong character with a desire to make a
successful career choice as well as making her community better for
all.
Nicole Bartelmay was a Logan County Student of the Month for January 2010. Nicole is the daughter of Franklin L. Bartelmay and Denise A. Bartelmay and granddaughter of Jack and
Shirley Bartelmay and Virginia Frost. Nicole is a senior at Lincoln
Community High School, where she has achieved many academic
accomplishments.
Nicole participates on the LCHS swim team and also works at the
YMCA, where she instructs swim lessons. She takes instructing
children very seriously and strongly believes in making positive
impressions in their daily lives through swimming.
Nicole is very involved in church activities. As a senior in high
school, she uses this as a chance to be a role model for the
incoming students by reaching out to those who would like to make a
change in their lives.
She participates in Lincoln's Environmentally Active Friends
Club, which is all about environmental leadership. She assists in
collecting and sorting used ink cartridges as well as paper from 75
classrooms.
She is also a member of the National Rifle Association and has
held the position of secretary and treasurer.
After graduating, Nicole plans to attend Eastern Illinois
University in Charleston, majoring in pre-physical therapy, and
pursue a career in physical therapy. She is looking forward to the
academics, volunteering, social and extracurricular opportunities
that Eastern has to offer. She plans on being involved with clubs,
sororities and volunteer activities. Eventually Nicole would like to
earn a Ph.D., which will allow her to be more competitive in her
career path and eventually open her own practice.
In an era when people are looking for positive role models, it is
truly rare to have individuals who want to be positive role models
and accept the challenges that life has to bring. This demonstrates
why Nicole is such a special person and very worthy of this honor.
November 2009
Logan County Students of the Month for November 2009 were Katie
Gosda and Abigail Cameron. Both are seniors at Lincoln Community
High School
Katie Gosda is the daughter of Roger and Sally Gosda.
Katie is a captain on this year's LCHS poms squad and a member of
the Marching Railers, Pep Band, Concert Band, Thespians, French Club
and Spanish Club. Katie is also involved in Good News Publishing
Company, Reality Illinois, Y Can Do volunteer swim lessons, inner
city missions, and previously volunteered in special needs classes
at Lincoln Community High School.
She has participated as an actor and volunteer usher for Lincoln
Community Theatre and is a member of Lincoln Christian Church, where
she is actively involved with the youth group and volunteers at
Vacation Bible School.
She was a Logan County Fair queen contestant in 2009. She works
part time at the Lincoln Dairy Bar and provides child-care services.
Katie shows a passion for helping and reaching out to people in
need, which is the greatest attribute anyone could have. Giving of
herself to help her neighbors makes Katie a strong role model and
someone who has truly set out to make a difference in her community.

Abigail Cameron attended Carroll Catholic Grade School, where
faith-based instruction gave her a positive moral foundation and
solid education. Upon entering Lincoln Community High School, she
enrolled in a health occupations class through Lincolnland Technical
Education Center to study nursing. Abbey also received hands-on
training on how to care for the elderly. Abbey has already taken and
passed the certified nursing assistant exam and plans to attend
college to receive a bachelor's degree in nursing after high school.
Abbey has been involved in many extracurricular activities,
including volleyball. She also coached younger players through the
extreme volleyball team and has volunteered to assist the Carroll
Catholic volleyball coach. She has been a lifeguard at the Elks pool
and taught swimming lessons to children ages 4-14.
She is also a member of Holy Family Church.
Abbey said: "Through my experiences the past four years I have
accomplished many things and am looking forward to taking all that I
have learned and applying it to my future."
Abbey will be truly successful in anything she chooses to do in
her life.
October
Logan County Students of the Month for October 2009 were Jamie
Bobell and Morgan Litterly. Both are seniors at Mount Pulaski High
School.
Jamie Bobell is the daughter of Jim and Sandy Bobell and
sister to Carley and Katey Bobell.
Jamie enjoys being involved in many activities and events as well
as the responsibility that come along with them. She has been
involved in cheerleading, Spirit Squad, National Honor Society,
Drama Club and Science Olympiad.
She is also involved in FFA and is the president of the Mount
Pulaski chapter and Section 14 secretary. Jamie says that FFA is one
of the most rewarding associations because it taught her
responsibility and leadership skills as well as how to work with
others.
Outside of school she has been involved in a youth group, has
been a member of 4-H since she was 8 years old and is currently
working at a local day care center.
Jamie's future plans are to attend Lincoln Land Community College
and then transfer to Western Illinois University to major in
agricultural education.
Morgan Litterly is the daughter of Sally Litterly and Jack
Litterly.
Morgan has been involved in National Honor Society, cheerleading,
student senate, track, volleyball, Spanish Club and various other
organizations and activities.
Morgan is a member of the Mount Pulaski Christian Church, assists
in the children's nursery and is also a member of the youth group at
St. Patrick's Catholic Church. She completed summer mission trips
for Catholic Heart Missions the past three years in Ohio, South
Carolina and Colorado.
When asked, Morgan said: "I do not like to highlight my
accomplishments, as I feel as though what I do is my way of becoming
a productive citizen in my community. Service to others and acting
as a good role model are two things that my brother and I learned at
an early age. I see my accomplishments as not only being attributed
to hard work and dedication, but also from the love and nurturing of
my family and friends."
These two outstanding students' accomplishments in school and in
their community attest to how special they really are.
September
The September 2009 Logan County Students of the Month were Amber
Stephenson and Casey Ritchhart. Both are seniors at Lincoln
Community High School.
Amber Stephenson is the daughter of Bob and Diane Stephenson
and sister to Andrew and Alyssa Stephenson.
Amber excels in golf and softball and serves as a mentor to many
young people who seek her advice in these activities. She has tied
the school record for a 9-hole score in golf. The Herald & Review
named her to its all-area first team in softball, and The Courier
named her player of the year and offensive player of the year in
softball. She was also 2008-2009 academic all-conference in both
softball and golf, a D.A.R.E. role model, PARTY volunteer, and is a
member of Pep Club and Spanish Club.
Amber is always willing to help her fellow students and make her
community a much better place for all. Amber presents a positive,
hardworking, dedicated attitude toward excelling in all that she
does.
Casey Ritchhart is the daughter of Scott and Kim Ritchhart.
Casey is a member of National Honor Society, a varsity football
and basketball cheerleader, participates in track, student
government, D.A.R.E., Pep Club and Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
She is in the top 12 percent of her senior class and maintained
high honors every year of high school.
She has also maintained over 24 hours of community service for
the last two years and has volunteered at Abraham Lincoln Memorial
Hospital. She has worked as a lifeguard at the Elks, teaches swim
lessons and is a secretary at Rick Hamm's State Farm office.
Casey is considering attending either Edwardsville University or
Eastern University with a career path in dentistry.
Casey has dedicated herself to improving young people's outlook
on life and striving to achieve what she truly wants for her future.
This is a testament to her strong character.
Both of these seniors are true leaders.
