Patrick
and April Doolin are restoring the Scully Building, but that doesn't
mean they aren't making the building as environmentally friendly as
possible.
For one,
they are drilling 27 wells about 200 feet deep for the geothermal
heating and cooling system. The geo system pumps a water solution
through a network of tubing that loops through the wells. Since the
ground temperature below 4 feet is constantly near 55 degrees, the
water in the tubing is either warmed or cooled to 55 degrees. In the
winter, the heat is extracted from the 55-degree water to warm the
building. In the summer, the 55-degree water is used to cool the air,
similar to an air conditioner. It is a very efficient and
environmentally friendly system since it requires far less utilities
than traditional systems.
The insulation being used is a fairly new product made completely
from recycled newspapers. It provides a thermal barrier between the
masonry walls and the interior walls. The newspapers are mixed with
fire-retardant material and glue. The mixture is sprayed into the walls like
foam insulation and has a spongelike consistency when dried. It, too,
is very efficient and environmentally friendly.
The work in just the last three weeks shows how far along
Roger Webster Construction has come. Walls are studded in,
electrical is being set as well as plumbing lines, as what the new
office building will look like becomes apparent.

work has come, see the picture album from Feb. 27:
