[March 24, 2010]  (AP)  The Northeast was expected to start drying out, but snow was forecast to return to the central Plains on Wednesday.

InsuranceThe extreme Northeast was expected to see half an inch to one inch of rain, while most of New England was expected to get only a few lingering showers in the morning. Highs were forecast in the 40s and 50s over the region. However, strong winds were expected to make the region feel cooler than the past few days. Parts of Massachusetts were expected to get gusts up to 35 mph.

Meanwhile, in the central U.S., a low pressure system was expected to strengthen as it moved off the central Rockies and into the central Plains. While this system has kicked up some heavy mountain snow, it should have enough energy to trigger 3-5 inches of snow over Kansas and Nebraska.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms were expected to develop over Oklahoma and Texas, but weren't likely to produce more than half an inch of rain in most areas. Meanwhile, the upper and mid-Mississippi River valleys were braced for flooding as sunny skies and highs in the 50s and 60s continued melting snow and ice over the region.

Out West, another Pacific storm spinning just off shore was expected to push a cold front toward the West Coast, likely reaching the Pacific Northwest and California Wednesday evening. The region was forecast to see strong winds and cloudy skies during the day, with most of the West Coast logging highs in the 60s.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Tuesday ranged from a low of 2 degrees at Stanley, Idaho, to a high of 89 degrees at Georgetown, Texas.
