WHEREAS, communities benefit when
their residents are healthy, and
WHEREAS, public health programs help residents learn how to
prevent disease and encourage residents to engage in healthy
behaviors, and
WHEREAS, the mission of the Logan County Department of Public
Health is to assure the health and safety of Logan County residents
through education, information and services, and
WHEREAS, residents of Logan County have the opportunity to learn
ways to maintain their health through the annual Community Health
Fair, which was started 25 years ago by Judy Horn, former nurse at
Lincoln College, and
WHEREAS, the Community Health Fair has been co-sponsored by the
Lincoln Park District and Logan County Department of Public Health
for more than 20 years, with Marcia Dowling of the health department
and Marcia Greenslate of the park district serving as organizers
that entire time, and
WHEREAS, a Children's Health Fair for Logan County fifth graders
has been added so students can learn about health by playing an
active part in the learning process, and
WHEREAS, the 25 exhibits in this year's Children's Health Fair on
March 26, 2010 included heart health, cancer prevention, nutrition,
safety, exercise, asthma, violence, tobacco, hand washing,
disabilities, farm safety and substance abuse, with many hands-on
activities for the 275 fifth graders who attended, and
WHEREAS, the goal and benefit of the Community Health Fair is to
make Logan County residents aware of health resources available in
the area, and to offer free or low-cost health screenings to them,
and
WHEREAS, attendance at this year's Community Health Fair on March
27, 2010 was between 1,200 and 1,400 people, with at least 80
exhibitors this year including substance abuse, nursing homes,
fitness, blood donation, senior services, dental, children's
resources, safety, emergency, domestic violence, environmental
health, nutritional supplements, tobacco awareness, poison
look-alikes, alternative medicine, cancer prevention, and asthma,
and

WHEREAS, health screenings are always very popular at the
Community Health Fair and this year included cholesterol, diabetes,
body mass index, hemoglobin, hearing, blood pressure, oxygen level
reading, oral cancer, Ph testing, dermascanner, and bone density,
and
WHEREAS, the average number of exhibitors at the Community Health
Fair has grown from 60-70 exhibitors to more than 80 exhibitors with
the addition of recycling exhibitors who were very well received
when introduced last year, and
WHEREAS, a planning committee assists the Logan County Department
of Public Department and the Lincoln Park District with organizing
the health fair including representatives from Abraham Lincoln
Memorial Hospital, Family Medical Center, U of I Extension, Lincoln
College, Logan County Joint Solid Waste Agency and the United Way,
and
WHEREAS, Logan County is unique in having such great
participation from the schools and the community, and so many
agencies willing to take their time to be at the Health Fair,
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Logan County Board commend
the Lincoln Park District and Logan County Department of Public
Health, and especially Marcia Greenslate and Marcia Dowling, for
their roles in organizing the annual Children's Health Fair and
Community Health Fair.
