A low pressure system was expected to continue tracking eastward over the Great Lakes and into the northeastern U.S.

The system was to create a cold front stretching down the East Coast and picking up moisture from the Atlantic Ocean. Scattered showers and thunderstorms were expected throughout the day, developing anywhere over the Northeast, New England and the Mid-Atlantic states.

Rainfall was forecast, with amounts ranging from a quarter to a half an inch, and up to an inch in areas of thunderstorm development. Any severe storms would be contained to the Mid-Atlantic states due to warm and humid conditions. Some strong winds with gusts up to 45 mph also were forecast as part of this system.

Behind this system, the Midwest and northern Plains were expected to see cool conditions and temperatures below seasonal. Parts of Minnesota and the Dakotas were forecast to see overnight lows dip into near-freezing temperatures. Highs were to range in the 50s and 60s in the northern and central Plains.

The West Coast was forecast to see another mild weather day before another trough of low pressure moved in from the Pacific Ocean. A few patchy clouds were expected in the Northwest, and the Southwest was to remain mostly sunny. Highs were to remain in the 60s over the West Coast and reach into the 70s and 80s in the Southwest.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Friday ranged from a low of 10 degrees at Pinedale, Wyo., to a high of 99 degrees at Laredo, Texas.
