[May 11, 2010]  (AP)  Severe weather will sweep through the Great Lakes on Tuesday, while light snow hits the Rockies. A strong low pressure system that kicked up severe weather in the central Plains will continue tracking eastward and over the Mississippi River Valley and up the Ohio River Valley. This system will create a warm front extending eastward into New England and a cold front that will hover over the southern Plains.

HardwareStrong flow from the south will push ample moisture in from the Gulf of Mexico, which will feed energy and strength into this system. This will allow for scattered showers and thunderstorms to develop over the Midwest, Great Lakes and New England regions. This system has a history of turning severe, so expect periods of heavy downpours, large hail, damaging winds and even tornado development. The cold front to the south will only kick up a few patchy clouds, and precipitation is not anticipated.

In the Rockies, a low pressure system that brought scattered showers with high-elevation snow to the West Coast will quickly move into the northern and central Rockies. Expect the northern Rockies to see 4-6 inches of snow, while the Great Basin will see 2-4 inches. Colorado will only see an inch or two of new snow on Tuesday.

Farther west, expect a warming trend over the West Coast as high pressure builds in and replaces the low pressure system moving through the Rockies. Expect increasingly sunny skies with highs in the 60s and 70s over the West Coast.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Monday ranged from a low of 10 degrees at Mount Washington, N.H., to a high of 102 degrees at Pecos, Texas.
