[May 15, 2010]  (AP)  A strong cold front over the Southeast was forecast to trigger another day of severe weather on Saturday.

A low pressure system in the north was to continue moving northeastward and farther into eastern Canada. This would allow for a cold front to keep stretching from the center of this system and extend down the East Coast, over the Southeast and into the southern Plains.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms were to develop along this front again, as the system was to obtain moisture from the Gulf of Mexico, while also pulling in additional moisture from the Atlantic Ocean. This front has a history of producing severe weather with periods of heavy rain, large hail, damaging winds and even tornadoes. Most areas along this front were expected to see a quarter to half an inch of rain, with up to an inch in areas of thunderstorms.

Meanwhile, to the west, a trough of low pressure developing over the Rockies was to kick up light and scattered rain showers, with light snow at higher elevations. Expect snowfall totals around an inch in the northern and central Plains. Scattered thunderstorms were also likely due to the trough creating an unstable atmosphere. The northern and central Plains, however, were to remain warm and dry on Saturday, under a ridge of high pressure.

Farther west, the West Coast was forecast to remain sunny and dry as high pressure prevails. A cold front created by a low pressure system in the Gulf of Alaska was to continue approaching and bring increasingly cloudy skies.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Friday ranged from a low of 19 degrees at Yellowstone, Wyo., to a high of 95 degrees at Chesapeake, Va.
