[May 19, 2010]  (AP)  Multiple weather features were forecast to bring active weather to the U.S. on Wednesday.

A low pressure system in the Northeast would slowly start to push eastward and into the Atlantic Ocean. However, flow around this system would continue pushing moisture onshore, allowing for another day of widespread scattered showers over the Northeast and New England. Rainfall totals would remain less than a quarter of an inch in most areas, and severe storms were not likely.

In the South, the low pressure system would create a cold front that would extend over the Southeast and into the southern Plains. This would allow for scattered showers and thunderstorms to develop ahead of the front as moisture from the Gulf of Mexico fed strength and energy into the system. Strongest storms were anticipated over the southern Plains, as another low pressure system moved off the Rockies and strengthened the front in the southern Plains. This would allow for thunderstorm development, some of which might turn severe as it had a history of producing damaging winds, large hail, heavy downpours and tornadoes. High elevations of the central Rockies would see another inch or two of snow Wednesday.

Meanwhile, in the North, a ridge of high pressure over the northern Plains and upper Midwest would allow for another sunny and warm day with pleasant conditions. Highs were expected to remain in the 70s over the region.

Out West, another low pressure system would move into the Pacific Northwest from the Pacific Ocean. The system would have picked up ample moisture, while also creating a cold front that would extend down the West Coast. This would kick up light and scattered showers throughout the day, with a chance of snow at higher elevations of the Sierras and Cascades.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Tuesday ranged from a low of 27 degrees at Alpena, Mich., to a high of 98 degrees at Pecos, Texas.
