[November 10, 2010]  NEW YORK (AP) -- The social realist artist Jack Levine (leh-VEEN') has died at age 95.

InsuranceLevine's son-in-law Leonard Fisher said the artist died Monday at his New York City home.

Levine's works are in the collections of major museums including the Art Institute of Chicago, New York's Museum of Modern Art and Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington.

He was known for skewering the rich and powerful. He served in the Army from 1942 to 1945 and later painted "Welcome Home," a satire of military power.

After the painting was included in a show of art in Moscow, Levine was subpoenaed to come before the House Un-American Activities Committee. In the end he was not required to appear.

Survivors include his daughter, Susanna Fisher, his son-in-law and two grandchildren.
