During a visit to India last Sunday, Obama said Myanmar's election "will be anything but free and fair," and said that, for too long, "the people of Burma have been denied the right to determine their own destiny." Suu Kyi's pro-democracy party won a landslide victory in the 1990 election, but was barred from taking office. She had been under house arrest for most of her life since then, after the ruling generals ignored the poll results.
