The nation's weather

[November 16, 2010]  (AP)  Two areas of active weather were anticipated across the nation Tuesday. A developing low pressure system in the Southeast was forecast to strengthen as flow around it pulled in ample moisture from the Gulf of Mexico.

This system creates a warm front that was expected to move northward, up the East Coast, bringing widespread scattered showers with it. The system had not yet triggered any severe storms early Tuesday, but has a history of producing between 1.5 to 2 inches of rain. The heaviest rains were expected to persist along the Gulf Coast, as well as along the front as it moved over the Mid-Atlantic states and the Tennessee Valley, into New England. The Northeast, however, would see a short break in wet weather as a front moved offshore and into the Atlantic Ocean. The system in the South was quickly approaching; thus, cloudy skies were expected to linger over the Northeast.

Out West, snow and rain were anticipated again as a trough slowly moved over the Rocky Mountains. The system was forecast to bring more scattered showers to the Pacific Northwest, with snow levels in the Cascades dropping to 2,000 feet. The central Rockies would see more snowfall, with totals ranging between 2 to 5 inches, while lighter snowfall was anticipated across the northern Rockies.

Mild weather was expected across the Plains, situated in between these two low pressure systems. The northern Plains would see partly cloudy skies and cool conditions with highs in the upper 30s, while the southern Plains were forecast to also see a few patchy clouds, with highs in the mid-50s to 70s.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Monday ranged from a low of 13 degrees at Alamosa, Colo., to a high of 89 degrees at Edinburg, Texas.
