James said Ashjian, his friend of 20 years, asked him to chair the Tea Party so Ashjian could run for office, but the title didn't come with any responsibilities. "The party has never really been functional," James said. He said Ashjian initially said he would withdraw from the election if Angle consented to his demands. Ashjian wanted national tea party leaders to stop trashing him, James said. Ashjian did not immediately return requests for comment Wednesday. He said in a statement that he was not told Angle would be at the meeting and that he was surprised by James' endorsement of Angle. "He declared that she was a 'weak' candidate and that I had his support in our effort," Ashjian said.
