[October 14, 2010] (AP) A strong nor'easter is expected to hit New England late Thursday evening. The low pressure trough dropping across the upper Mississippi Valley will gain strength as it pushes through the Ohio Valley and the Mid-Atlantic.

This will result in a new area of low pressure along the North Carolina coast that will lift northward into eastern Massachusetts. Bands of showers are expected throughout the Ohio Valley during the day, while more widely scattered precipitation and locally heavy rainfall is expected in the Mid-Atlantic and New England by late Thursday evening.

Heavy rainfall totals may cause minor localized flooding. Increasing winds will accompany significant amounts of precipitation in eastern New York and New England. Windy weather across these regions may cause power line and minor property damage.

Meanwhile, strong northerly winds on the back of the low will usher colder air from southern Canada southward, translating into cooler temperatures throughout much of the eastern U.S. through the weekend. To the south, strong winds, bands of rainfall and thunderstorms will persist in southern Florida as Hurricane Paula provides a steady stream of deep tropical moisture across the region. Paula is expected to weaken into a tropical storm as it passes over western Cuba.

Elsewhere, high pressure will produce another warm and dry weather day throughout much of the West on Thursday. A deepening low pressure system will swing a cold front across the Pacific Northwest coast with spotty rain showers in the evening.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Wednesday ranged from a low of 15 degrees at West Yellowstone, Mont., to a high of 103 degrees at Yuma, Ariz.
