The nation's weather

[October 15, 2010]  (AP)  Two low pressure systems will combine to create a strong nor'easter over New England on Friday. This system will cover most of the northeastern half of the nation, stretching from the Atlantic to the Great Lakes. The system will pull moisture and energy in from the Atlantic Ocean, kicking up strong winds and heavy rains.

Expect rainfall totals to range between 1 to 3 inches in most areas. Some snow may develop at high elevations of the interior regions of the North. A winter storm watch is in effect for most of Friday. Elevations above 2,000 feet are likely to see snow, or a combination of rain and snow, and will most likely be contained to northern New York and the extreme Northeast.

Meanwhile, high pressure builds in behind this system, covering the Mississippi River Valley. This system continues pushing cool and dry air over the Southeast. Low humidity and strong surface winds are favorable conditions for rapid fire spread. Fire advisories remain in effect over much of the Southeast and Gulf states.

Farther south, wet weather will continue as the remnants of Hurricane Paula slowly move northeastward over Cuba and past southern Florida. Expect another windy day with scattered showers as this system decreases to a tropical depression with winds remaining less than 39 mph.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Thursday ranged from a low of 11 degrees at Charleston, Nev., to a high of 102 degrees at Indio, Calif.
