Corps to shore up trouble spot from Katrina

[October 16, 2010]  NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- The Army Corps of Engineers is doing more work to strengthen the Inner Harbor Navigation Canal, a spot in New Orleans where floodwalls broke during Hurricane Katrina.

The corps says it will reinforce levees and floodwalls along the canal to meet beefed-up standards the corps is using in the wake of Katrina.

The corps will strengthen floodwalls and levees with concrete, stability berms, buttress walls and wells that cut down on water seeping underground.

The corps says all the improvements will take place within the existing rights of way along the canals that make up the harbor.
