[October 16, 2010] (AP) The nor'easter was expected to slowly push away from the East Coast on Saturday, allowing for heavy rainfall to diminish. As cool air continued pouring in from Canada, overnight lows were forecast to drop below freezing. Thus, snow was likely again at higher elevations of the extreme Northeast.

A winter weather advisory was in effect through Saturday morning, while rain across upstate New York was expected to diminish by midday. Rainfall totals on Saturday were expected to be significantly lower than Friday, while winds were forecast to increase across the region. Wind gusts were expected to range from 25 mph to 35 mph.

Just west of this system in the northern Plains, a cold front was expected to continue sweeping through the northern U.S. The system was expected to strengthen as it moved off the Rockies and into the Dakotas and upper Midwest by evening, where it could kick up a few light showers. Otherwise, the Plains was expected to see a mild day as high pressure dominates over the Plains, Mississippi River Valley and Southeast. Dangerous fire weather conditions were expected over the Gulf states, due to low relative humidity with strong wind gusts near the surface.

Active weather was in the forecast for the West on Saturday. A low pressure system in northwestern Mexico was expected to slowly move into the Southwest. This was expected to bring a chance for high-level showers and thunderstorms, with light precipitation expected throughout the day.

Temperatures in the lower 48 states Friday ranged from a low of 21 degrees at Alamosa, Colo., to a high of 91 degrees at Palm Springs, Calif.
