Narrative:
Unit 1 was traveling southbound on I-55 near
milepost 132.5 in Logan County. Unit 2 was traveling northbound in
the right lane of I-55. Unit 3 was traveling northbound in
the left lane, preparing to pass Unit 2.
Unit 1 drove off the left side of the roadway and into the center
median. Unit 1 continued through the median and into the northbound
lanes. Unit 1 struck Units 2 and 3. Units 2 and 3 skidded off the
right side of the roadway into the right ditch and caught fire.
The Unit 2 driver, Anhalt, was pronounced dead at the scene. The Unit 1
driver, Brody, and Unit 2 passenger, Busche, were transported to
Memorial Medical Center in Springfield with non-life-threatening injuries.
The Unit 3 driver, Kirk, was not injured. The Unit 1 driver, Brody, was
charged with driving under the influence of drugs and improper lane
usage -- violated median. Northbound I-55 was closed and
traffic was rerouted onto I-155 to Illinois Route 136
eastbound and back to I-55 northbound. Northbound I-55
was reopened to traffic at 7:46 p.m.

Coroner's report
LINCOLN -- Logan County Coroner Robert Thomas has announced that Dale J. Anhalt,
68, of Lake Mills, Jefferson County, Wis., was
pronounced dead at 3:35 p.m. Friday at a three-vehicle accident on
Interstate 55 between the 130 and 131 mile markers. The cause of death is under investigation.
The Illinois State Police agency is handling the investigation.
Dr. John Ralston, a certified pathologist, will perform the autopsy
Saturday in Springfield. The preliminary
findings may not be released due to the investigation.. Claussen
Funeral Home in Wisconsin is handling the funeral arrangements.
