[October 18, 2010] (AP) Showers and thunderstorms were expected in portions of central and southern California on Monday as an offshore low pressures slid down the coast.

Insurance Precipitation and storms were forecast to spread eastward, reaching areas from southern Wyoming through central areas of New Mexico. Snow was likely over the higher elevations of the Sierra Nevadas and Colorado.

Elsewhere in the West, high pressure would build into northern California and the Pacific Northwest with drier, warmer and sunnier weather conditions.

Meanwhile, cool high pressure was expected to keep dry, fall-like conditions over much of the Midwest and East. While high pressure would limit the amount of moisture over these regions, a few areas of light showers and thunderstorms may develop along an east-to-west frontal boundary that was forecast to stall over the Mid-Atlantic through the central Plains. Cooler air from the north would keep daytime highs in the Midwest, Northeast and Mid-Atlantic below seasonal averages.

Finally, to the south of the frontal boundary, high pressure over the central Gulf Coast was expected to produce predominantly dry and warm conditions across the Deep South. Temperatures were forecast to run about 10 degrees above average Monday. Meanwhile, a few isolated thunderstorms were expected near the Texas Gulf Coast, the Texas Panhandle, Oklahoma and southern Florida.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Sunday ranged from a low of 18 degrees at Kalispell, Mont., to a high of 100 degrees at Death Valley, Calif.
