NH murder trial to open with tour of home

[October 25, 2010]  NASHUA, N.H. (AP) -- Defense attorneys in the first murder trial in the deadly New Hampshire home invasion are renewing their efforts to get the trial moved.

Lawyers plan to argue motions before jurors convene Monday afternoon and are bused to the Mont Vernon home where a mother and her 11-year-old daughter were attacked with a machete and a knife one year ago.

Eighteen-year-old Steven Spader is on trial for murder and other charges in connection with the house break-in and attacks that killed 42-year-old Kimberly Cates and severely wounded her daughter, Jaimie. Jaimie survived by feigning death as her assailants continued to slash and kick her.

Jaimie Cates may be called to testify at the trial. She is on the list of 70 witnesses the state may call.
