[September 10, 2010]  (AP)  A low pressure system in the North was forecast to bring active weather to the central U.S. on Friday.

TheInsurance system would develop over the northern Rockies and strengthen as it moved into the Plains. It would take a more northeastward track, moving into Canada, but flow around this system would produce a cold front that was expected to push through the northern and central Plains, reaching the upper and mid-Mississippi River Valley by Friday night. Scattered showers and thunderstorms were expected to develop along this front, some of which may turns severe with strong winds and heavy rains.

Meanwhile, to the south, rains and strong winds were expected to persist over the South as the remnants of Tropical Storm Hermine continued moving eastward from the lower Mississippi River Valley to the East Coast. Rainfall totals were expected to reduce around this system, as it had lost most of its strength; however, residual atmospheric moisture would allow for some scattered showers to persist.

The South was forecast to remain hot and humid with highs in the 90s, while the North would see cooler conditions with highs in the 60s and 70s. In the Northeast and New England, high pressure and sunny skies were expected to persist as high pressure dominated. A few patchy clouds were expected, with highs also in the 60s and 70s.

In the West, critical fire conditions were expected to persist over northern Colorado and southern Wyoming. High pressure over the Rockies would bring more gusty winds with dry surface conditions. Strong winds ranging from 15-20 mph were expected with gusts up to 30-40 mph.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Thursday ranged from a low of 30 degrees at Hibbing, Minn., to a high of 101 degrees at Laredo, Texas.
