[September 14, 2010]  (AP)  Scattered showers were forecast to move through the central Plains on Tuesday as a low pressure system developed off the Rockies.

HardwareThe system was expected to create a frontal boundary with a warm front leading it into the Plains and mid-Mississippi River Valley. Flow around this system would continue pulling moisture in from the Gulf of Mexico, supplying energy and allow for scattered showers and thunderstorms to pop up along the front. Scattered storms were expected with strong winds and periods of heavy rainfall over Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, Oklahoma, northern Texas and Missouri. Rainfall totals would range from a quarter to a half of an inch, with over an inch possible in areas of severe storm development. The region would remain hot and humid with highs in the 90s and heat indexes above 100 degrees.

In the East, the low pressure system in eastern Canada would push northeastward and move farther away from the U.S. East Coast. At the same time, high pressure was forecast to build in and bring drier conditions, allowing for mostly sunny skies and warm temperatures. The Northeast, Great Lakes and Midwest were expected to see highs in the mid-70s, while the Southeast would remain hot and humid with highs in the 90s.

In the West, a trough of low pressure would sit offshore in the Pacific Ocean and push moisture in. This was expected to kick up a few coastal clouds, but precipitation was not anticipated.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Monday ranged from a low of 21 degrees at Shirley Basin, Wyo., to a high of 111 degrees at Death Valley, Calif.
