The nation's weather

[September 27, 2010]  (AP)  Little change in weather activity was expected throughout the nation Monday.

In the East, cool and wet weather was forecast to continue in the eastern third of the nation due to a dominant low pressure trough.

InsuranceFlow associated with the trough would usher significant moisture across the Southeast, Mid-Atlantic and the Northeast throughout the day. This surge of moisture combined with frontal boundaries over the Southeast and the Mid-Atlantic would translate into more scattered showers with embedded thunderstorms, bands of heavy rainfall and strong wind gusts. Persistent showers and periodic heavy rainfall were expected to create chances of local flooding throughout the day. Increased instability over these regions was also expected to create chances of severe storms with possible tornadoes across parts of the eastern Gulf Coast states, the Carolinas and the Mid-Atlantic. Additional showers were expected in parts of the Northeast and New England areas.

Behind the active weather in the East, high pressure would provide another dose of fair and dry weather conditions to much of the central and western regions of the nation. Cool, typical autumn temperatures would accompany mostly sunny skies in the Midwest. Meanwhile, the inland areas of the West were forecast to experience more pronounced warming with above normal daytime highs, while areas along the West Coast see more moderate warming. More seasonable weather was expected to return to the West by the midweek.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Sunday ranged from a low of 19 degrees at Charleston, Nev., to a high of 113 degrees at Indio, Calif.
