[May 10, 2011] (AP) Multiple weather features will bring active weather to the nation on Saturday.

A low pressure system that sits off the East Coast and has brought periods of heavy snowfall to the Northeast is forecast to keep skirting up the coast. Heavy snow showers are expected to persist in northern Maine. Snowfall accumulation is expected to be lighter than Friday, ranging from 1 to 3 inches. High temperatures are expected to remain in the mid-30s to lower 40s across the extreme Northeast.

Meanwhile, a low pressure system was following closely behind this system as it sweeps through the Midwest and up the Ohio River Valley. Flow around this trough will pull warm air in from the South, and this will allow precipitation to stay as rain across the Ohio River Valley and New England. Higher elevations of the Appalachians are expected to see a dusting of snow overnight. High temperatures in the Midwest and Northeast are forecast to range in the 40s and 50s.

In the West, a trough of low pressure was dipping into the Pacific Northwest from the Gulf of Alaska. This system is expected to push a cold front onshore that will trigger scattered showers. Rain was forecast at lower levels, while snow was expected to develop above 2,000 feet across the Cascades. The prevailing warm conditions in California were forecast to create high snow levels across the northern Sierras, with only flurries expected above 8,000 feet. Rainfall totals in the Pacific Northwest and northern California were forecast to vary around half an inch.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states on Friday ranged from a morning low of 14 degrees at Mount Washington, N.H., to a high of 95 degrees at Palm Springs, Calif.
