Sports commission, Run for Your Life, Ryan Huffer and Vicki Dugan make Close Up

[April 01, 2011]  The next sports commission meeting is Wednesday, April 6, at 6 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend and invite others who may be interested. The meeting will be at the NEW Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital in Lincoln.

Lincoln Christian University is once again hosting Run for Your Life. This year's run-walk will be on Friday, April 8, at 4 p.m. Join us on LCU's campus for a flat, fast, paved two-mile race that tours the LCU campus and nearby neighborhoods.   

The cost to register is $15 per person before April 4. After that, the cost is $22. Race day registration is also available until 3:30 p.m. The cost includes a Run for Your Life race T-shirt.

A post-race party and awards ceremony will include food and prizes. LCU medals will be given to all those who finish. Plus, awards and cash prizes will be given in over 30 categories. Participants will enjoy hot dogs, chips, ice cream and door prizes.

Ryan Huffer, son of Jeff and Patty Huffer of Lincoln, was selected as the Lincoln Community High School Senior of the Month for February.

Ryan's school activities have included baseball, Spanish Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Pep Club, L.E.A.F. Club and National Honor Society, among others.

Ryan is active in the community as well, including volunteer work with Logan County 4-H, Together for Lincoln, Salvation Army, Logan County Food Pantry, Lincoln Park District, West Lincoln-Broadwell Fun Fest, Logan County Fair, Holy Family Church Active Catholic Teens and Carroll Catholic School, among other volunteer efforts.

Ryan plans to attend Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and is planning on communications as a college major.

Logan County Bank is proud to sponsor the LCHS Senior of the Month/Year award and scholarship program and congratulates Ryan.

Each monthly winner receives a $50 U.S. savings bond from Logan County Bank and is eligible for a $1,500 scholarship awarded by the bank, to be used at the college of their choice.

Logan County Treasurer Vicki Dugan was among 93 county treasurers from across the state who attended a meeting March 30 and 31 hosted by Illinois State Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka in Springfield.

"As chief financial officers, we have a responsibility to ensure that tax dollars are spent wisely," Topinka said. "By attending this year's training program, Vicki has shown a continued commitment to better serve the people of Logan County."

The 2011 County Treasurers Training Program is a state-mandated education workshop hosted every four years by the Illinois Office of the Comptroller. The meeting was planned in coordination with the Illinois County Treasurers Association.
