LC baseball takes 1st place in conference with wins over Spoon River

[April 11, 2011]  Lincoln College played host to Spoon River Community College on Saturday, coming away with two MWAC victories, 12-2 and 12-6.

In game one, Brad Passini (Standard) picked up the win in his 4 1-3 innings of work. Kenny May (Belleville) was 4-4 with two RBIs and two stolen bases, and Andy Mosier (Lake Orion) went 2-3 with a double to lead the Lynx offense in the 12-2 game.

In game two, the Lynx offense piled up 12 more runs on 16 hits. The main contributors in the offensive outburst were May, 4-5 with a double; Derek Steiner (Belleville), 2-3 with a double and four RBIs; Mosier 3-5; and Manny Acevedo (Orlando, Fla.), 3-4 with a triple, two RBIs and two stolen bases. Steven Sotiropoulos (Belleville) picked up the win in six innings of work.

The Lynx traveled to Canton on Sunday for the final two games of the four-game series. Lincoln College came away with another two MWAC victories, 12-8 and 5-0.

In game one, the Lynx hitters exploded with five home runs. May, Steiner, Acevedo, Josh Cook (Yorkville) and Milton Alvira (Orlando, Fla.) all homered for the Lynx. Ricky Cody (St. Louis, Mo.) received the win on the mound, tossing five innings and striking out five.

The Lynx completed the four-game sweep with a shutout performance from the LC pitching staff. Miles Quintal (O'Fallon) threw eight shutout innings, allowing only five hits. May, 2-5 with a double and a stolen base, and Brett Freund (Festus, Mo.), 3-4 with an RBI, led all hitters.

With the weekend sweep, the Lynx took over sole possession of first place in the conference.

Lincoln College (15-11, 11-1 MWAC) will travel to Ina to take on Rend Lake Community College on Thursday.
