[April 20, 2011]
On April 30 from 1 to 4 p.m., children
ages 3-7, preschool to first grade, are invited to the
Davidson-Schaffer Gymnasium at Lincoln College to participate in a
Reading Railroad book day event sponsored by the Iota Chi Chapter of
Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society.

Lincoln College's Iota Chi Chapter embarked upon a yearlong campaign
to increase literacy, and The Reading Railroad is the chapter's
final event. Area children and their parents are invited to
participate in activity "stations" intended to strengthen children's
love of reading. Reading Railroad station stops include Bookmark
Stop, where participants can create their own bookmarks, and
Storybook Lane, to hear a story read to them. Children who visit
all Reading Railroad stations will receive a book of their own to
start their personal library and a certificate for a free pizza
provided by Sorrento's Pizza in Lincoln. Kid-friendly snacks,
including make-your-own trail mix and popcorn, and drinks will be
provided.
"We hope The Reading Railroad will inspire kids to enjoy
reading," said Cody Follis, chapter president, when asked about the
significance of the event. "The stations we have planned will not
only expose kids to different books, but also include activities
related to reading and the rewards of reading."
Reservations are encouraged but not required. For additional
information or to RSVP, contact the chapter adviser, Assistant
Professor Spring Hyde, at 217-732-3155, ext. 207.
Phi Theta Kappa is a junior college academic honor society. To be
eligible for membership, students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.5
or higher and have earned a minimum of 15 credits at Lincoln
College. Phi Theta Kappa and the Iota Chi Chapter dedicate
themselves to four hallmarks: service, scholarship, fellowship and
leadership.
