The nation's weather

[August 11, 2011]  (AP)  More active weather is anticipated in the eastern half of the nation Thursday. Light scattered showers and chances of thunderstorms will linger in the northern Northeast as low pressure remains situated over southeastern Canada and an associated cold front exits the New England coast.

HardwareTo the south, light showers will continue to form near a stationary front that will remain stretched across the hot and humid Southeast and the southern Plains. The heaviest amounts of rain and strongest storms are expected in parts of Arkansas and northern Mississippi. There is slight risk for severe weather development to the north of this boundary from parts of Oklahoma eastward into parts of Arkansas and Mississippi. The main concerns with these storms will be damaging wind gusts and hail.

Severe weather development will also be possible in the central and northern High Plains as a weak Pacific system advances eastward into the northern Plains. The main concerns with these storms will be wind damage.

Elsewhere, fairly calm weather conditions are expected west of the Continental Divide. A few isolated storms may form in areas of the Southwest.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Wednesday ranged from a morning low of 32 degrees at Truckee-Tahoe, Calif., to a high of 107 degrees at Pecos, Texas
