[August 15, 2011]  CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (AP) -- The largest gathering of poets in North America has crowned a team from Denver as the new champion of its annual poetry slam competition.

Dnver's Slam Nuba was named the winner Saturday night after a four-team final bout at the Berklee Performance Center in Boston.

This week, Boston and nearby Cambridge hosted the annual National Poetry Slam!, which attracted more than 300 poets from around the country. Poetry Slam is a combination of spoken word and performance art.

During the competition, poets from each team performed their work before a live audience, and judges gave the performers points from one to 10.

Joseph Andres Romero, a member of the team from Albuquerque, N.M., said the competition isn't as important as the inspiration poets get from one another by sharing their work.
