[August 16, 2011] (AP) The storm system that brought significant rain to the Northeast over the past few days will finally lift to the northeast and into the Canadian Maritimes. As it moves out of the Northeast, precipitation will gradually diminish, leaving showers and possibly thunderstorms through New England. Cool air will remain as the storm moves away, keeping maximum temperatures mostly in the 70s in New England.

Meanwhile, a cold front will move through the northern Plains and into the upper Midwest. This front will gain moisture as it moves eastward, instigating rain and thunderstorms from Missouri through the Dakotas and Wisconsin. Unfortunately, the rain will not reach as far south as Texas, extending the drought that has plagued the state.

In the West, a strengthening high pressure system will promote a warming trend along the West Coast. Inland areas of California should expect temperatures in the triple digits, while coastal areas will rise into the 70s and 80s. In the Southwest, monsoonal moisture will produce scattered showers and thunderstorms from Arizona through Colorado.

The southern half of the country, from Southern California through the Southeast, will rise into the 90s and 100s, while the northern Plains will see temperatures in the 70s, 80s, and some 90s. The Northwest will rise into the 70s and 80s.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Monday have ranged from a morning low of 32 degrees at Truckee, Calif., to a high of 105 degrees at Needles, Calif.
