[August 19, 2011] (AP) Intense heat will continue to linger over the south-central United States on Friday, while the central U.S. will see plenty of active weather. Hot and humid conditions will persist across the southern Plains and lower Mississippi Valley as a strong high pressure system sits over the Southwest. Temperatures will reach over 100 degrees, with heat indexes near 115. However, high pressure positioned over the Gulf of Mexico will push moisture onshore, triggering areas of showers and thunderstorms for the Southeast.

In the central U.S., a frontal boundary will slowly move over the central Plains and Tennessee Valley triggering moderate to heavy showers. There is a chance of possible severe thunderstorms over the eastern central Plains, with possible flash flooding over the Kansas-Nebraska border.

To the east, an area of low pressure on the central East Coast will push moisture onshore triggering a few areas of showers and thunderstorms over the Mid-Atlantic states. At the same time, scattered showers will also pop up over parts of the Northeast and New England states.

To the west, monsoon moisture will persist in the Southwest producing showers and thunderstorms over parts of the Four Corners region. Meanwhile, high pressure positioned over the Southwest will continue to bring sunny and dry conditions across most of the western U.S. However, a trough off the West Coast will bring weak onshore flow, creating low clouds and fog along the coast in the morning.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Thursday ranged from a morning low of 30 degrees at West Yellowstone, Mont., to a high of 107 degrees at Phoenix, Ariz.
