[August 22, 2011] (AP) Another round of active weather is anticipated for the eastern half of the nation Monday as a long cold front and waves of low pressure push through the Eastern Seaboard.

The top portion of this front will move through the Northeast and exit the New England coast with showers and thunderstorms. As the system moves offshore, a wave of low pressure will continue to fuel storms in coastal areas. A second cold front behind this system will stir up additional bands of precipitation and storms in the western and northern Northeast through the latter half of the day. Meanwhile, the lower half of the aforementioned front will drop across the Mid-Atlantic and extend through the Southeast and the southern Plains. Energy and moisture ahead of this front will kick up areas of scattered showers and thunderstorms.

Elsewhere, waves of low pressure will trigger showers and chances of thunderstorms in parts of the Plains and mid-Mississippi Valley, while high pressure provides drier and calmer weather to the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley.

In the West, monsoonal moisture will keep chances of showers and thunderstorms over the Southwest. Additional showers may develop in western Washington as a cold front approaches the Pacific Northwest.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Sunday ranged from a morning low of 32 degrees at Butte, Mont., to a high of 106 degrees at Frederick, Okla.
