Dr. Freesmeier's class, running shoe clinic, blood drives, sidewalk chalk classes and Saturday bike rides make Close Up

[August 23, 2011]  Dr. Dan Freesmeier's health issues class will not meet in September due to the Labor Day holiday.

For many years, you may have attended his very informative health issues classes on the first Monday night of each month at the Logan County Health Department. The class was canceled due to budget cuts there but will begin again at 6 p.m. Oct. 3 at Faith Lutheran Church, 2320 N. Kickapoo, and will be sponsored by the Faith Lutheran Parish Nurses. The one-hour classes will continue at the church on the first Monday of each month at 6 p.m.

Dr. Dan will start with a topic but will also address any of your health questions on any topic. Please do come, bring your family and friends, and learn how your body works. You will be amazed at what all you will learn.

Lincoln Park District is hosting a running shoe clinic. Have you ever wondered what type of running shoe is best for you? Mitch Hobbs, owner of Often Running, in Bloomington, will lead this casual but very informative event. Mitch will give each individual an evaluation of their stride and offer suggestions as to what type of shoe will most benefit their needs. He will even show what type of socks you should be running in. This free event will be on Thursday, Sept. 8, at 6:30 p.m. on the indoor courts. Runners and walkers will be evaluated in the order they arrive.

The Lincoln Area YMCA is inviting individuals and families to bike rides planned for Saturday morning, during the Lincoln Art & Balloon Festival.

A five-mile Family Fun Ride will travel around the festival area. A 30-mile course is planned for those who want to see the countryside. It will go through town to Nicholson Road, travel north to Union, circle east and south to the edge of Lawndale, head west to Skunk Hollow, proceed south on Nicholson Road and back into Lincoln. The highlight of the longer ride will be crossing over one of the last iron-trussed bridges in the area.

Registration in advance at the Y office, 604 Broadway, is $5 for a single rider and $18 for a family of four or more. Add $2 for registration the day of the race.

Both rides will start at the Y Activity Center, 719 Wyatt Ave. Registration will begin at 8 a.m. and rides will leave at 8:30 a.m. Riders of all ages are invited to participate, but those 17 and younger must be accompanied by a participating adult.
