[August 24, 2011]  Remember when the letter carriers collected nonperishable food items in May? In case you were wondering about the final numbers, the total has been announced for the nationwide Stamp Out Hunger campaign.

News received from Roger Bakken at the Lincoln post office is that 70.6 million pounds of nonperishable food items were collected nationally on May 14.

"The Lincoln letter carriers appreciate the community's involvement with this campaign," Bakken said. "Local food pantries were provided with over 5,400 pounds of food from the local effort. In the last year or two, the economy has made it more difficult for individuals and families, but they have stepped up and made an effort to help others in their time of need."

Food donations collected in Lincoln were distributed to five food pantries in the city.

The 2010 food drive, sponsored by the National Association of Letter Carriers, was the 19th annual nationwide event.
