[December 01, 2011]  SANAA, Yemen (AP) -- Yemeni officials say that fighting between the army and armed tribesmen has left 13 people dead in a restive central city.

A Defense Ministry statement says that five soldiers were killed and 15 others wounded on Thursday amid heavy shelling in Taiz.

A security official meanwhile says four tribesmen and four civilians have also died, and 28 more people have been injured. He spoke on condition of anonymity in line with security rules.

The official says that tens of thousands were demonstrating in Taiz against the army shelling, and that protesters have attacked houses belonging to members of the country's ruling party.

Taiz, a hotbed of opposition to the government, is regularly shelled by the army responding to hit-and-run attacks by tribesmen.
