Ill. House to meet again on tax relief package

[December 08, 2011]  SPRINGFIELD (AP) -- Illinois lawmakers are returning to the state Capitol for another try at passing tax relief for businesses, including some big names threatening to leave the state.

Speaker Michael Madigan announced the House will convene on Monday. There was no immediate word on when the Senate will meet.

Lawmakers have been considering a tax relief package. Part of it would help big companies like Sears and the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. Other parts would help Illinois businesses in general. Families and the working poor could get some relief too.

The package failed dramatically in the House last week. Now lawmakers are talking about splitting it into several pieces and holding multiple votes.

An aide to House Republican leader Tom Cross said Tuesday no decision has been made and negotiations are continuing.
